The Russo Japanese War lasted from 1904-1905. There was a huge conflict between Japan and Russia. Japan noticed that Russia failed to withdraw from Manchuria. Japan came up with a concession and suggested the idea that they would support Russia and its dominance if they would divide the area into the spheres of influence. The Russian government did not like this and was willing to fight Japan thinking they would win. Without declaring war, Japan attacked Port Arthur and that is how all the violence began. The Russian government underestimated the Japanese Navy as the won many battles.

Although, Japan wanted to divide it into the spheres of influence. The spheres of influence means to have predominant control over a foreign area or territory.
Japan was changing into a whole new different country. They wanted to take part in the imperialist world. Although Japan was not so demanding. They were willing to make a deal with Russia instead of completely taking over Manchuria. Russia was not a friendly country. The Russian government refused to make this deal. There were still some Russians in Manchuria due to the Boxer Rebellion and they refused to leave as well. The Russians underestimated the Japanese Navy and said they would rather go to war with Japan instead of making this compromise. Russia wasn't worried one bit. They were certain they would win any war against Japan. Once Japan noticed that the Russians would not leave and they refused to compromise with them, Japan took a major step as a country.
Japan made a surprise attack on Russia. In 1904 the Japanese navy attacked Port Arthur. Port Arthur was one of Russia's major ports which was open all year long. Japan made this war like move without actually declaring war. Russia was stunned. This attack broke out into the Russo-Japanese War.
